Mario Odyssey – Switch

Mario Odyssey on the Nintendo Switch has Mario leaving the Mushroom Kingdom to reach an unknown open world-like setting, like Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine. He sets out to stop Bowser from Marrying Peach while exploring many kingdoms and areas. With his new companion Cappy! allows him to control characters including a Trex and other known characters from the Mario universe.

With the Game being on the Nintendo Switch you can play the game on your console with the joy-cons attached, or separate and the pop-up screen the screen with the stand, or lastly connected to the TV in the traditional way. However, to play 2 players you would need two sets of joy-cons as one of you will control Mario and the other the Cappy. (even when you have taken control of the something

Its Mario Odyssey !

Let’s be honest, when it comes to Nintendo consoles and games throughout the year, Mario games, and in particular, adventure-based Mario games tends to be the must-haves for the console. They almost always set the standard whether it be Mario, Mario Sunshine, Mario 64, Super Marion, New Super Mario Bros. So to have brought this out quite early in the Nintendo Switches life was a solid and clever thing to do, that no doubt helped boost its sales.

Tigger loves his Switch and really enjoys his adventure games, he does like a varied mix of games but he will often choose an adventure style game over most. I could tell how much like Mario Odyssey by how passionate he was about the game, I asked him some questions as he had now completed it where I had only played it with him. As I said this is always a test in how good the game is for me, he will just talk about something if it’s ok, quite quickly and over, but with this, he was beyond chatty, and then kept telling me stuff over the next couple of days lol.

The Game itself is great, in reality, it is worth the purchase at full price even though it been out a little while, it is one of the must-buys that I mentioned earlier, much like Mario Kart. But the fact that the Cappy character adds much more diversity to the game, along with updates that now includes VR. It’s worth a purchase.

There are lots of kingdoms to explore and levels within them, even if you have completed the main story you can continue to try to unlock the rest of it. There are traditional characters like Luigi and Toad around to add familiarity to the game, and much like the 3d style Mario games in the past there are lots of different types of puzzles to solve.

Many of the kingdoms are different from each other, from water to dessert and more traditional greenery ones. There are things to collect like coins and half-moons(currency to unlike etc..) and these can be obtained via the kingdoms and hidden challenges. The Multiplayer is OK, for me a slight let down, however, Mario adventure games are traditionally single-player, only the odd new super Mario bros game has really utilised Multiplayer successfully in the franchise.

Player 2 can control Cappy, but is quite limited as he can fly around and hit, even when it takes control of something, which is odd as I would have thought in 2 players, one is Mario and one is the character you took over but no. Player 1 takes control again. It’s a small thing but just surprising.

Overall

Overall Tigger loves it, and he continues to play it regularly even though he completed the story which says a lot in today’s world with games.  As the first big Mario adventure game on the system which tends to be always the big game for the Nintendo consoles, it’s a good start and has its normal unique quirky things.

I think the last time I played a Mario game was when the Nintendo DS first came out and I was quite obsessed with it then! I think this is something my nephew would enjoy, the graphics are incredible too.

I love a bit of Mario. The boys are still a bit too young for this but I know as soon as they’re old enough they’ll be Mario fans too!

I’ve recently bought a switch and I am obsessed! I’ve purchased mario party and mario kart 8 and I think this game has to be next. I love reading reviews on games before you buy them as it allows you to know if it’s worth it.
