It can be fun to take a flight, but it’s always a bit of a gamble. Sometimes, it’s as smooth and pleasant as taking a short taxi ride; at others, it’s a long and gruelling experience that has you seriously questioning whether you want to travel again in the future. That’s how bad they can be.
Happily, if you’ve been put off flying — or were never a big fan to begin with — then there are plenty of other options available to you. Just because flying has become the number one way to travel, it doesn’t mean it’s the only one. Remember: people were travelling long before the invention of the plane!
Below, we’ll offer some excellent non-flying travel ideas to keep in mind for your next getaway.

Non-flying travel ideas to keep in mind for your next getaway
Take a Train Trip
There’s something seriously romantic about train travel. It seems to hark back to earlier, simpler times. Plus, there are a host of other advantages too — namely that you typically arrive right in the centre of the place you’re visiting, which can make it sometimes just as fast as travelling by plane once all the external journeys have been taken into account.
To experience train travel at its best, look at taking a sleeper train. There are plenty of journeys throughout Europe to choose from, including the new London to Berlin sleeper.
Take a Road Trip
One of the downsides of flying is that you bypass all of the ground that’s underneath where you’re flying. You can journey all the way to Australia without having a sense of any of the countries below. That’s just one of the many advantages of road trips — you get to see everything along the way. The journey is just as fun — if not more so — than the end destination.
You can road trip in your own car if you like, but for an extra memorable getaway, look at a luxury motorhome hire; not only will it allow you to road trip in style, but it’ll also offer true freedom of the road since you’ll know that you always have somewhere to sleep.
As to where to go? Well, that one’s on you. You can stay within the UK, or you can journey down to Spain. When you have a set of wheels, the world is your oyster.
Ferry Adventures
For most of human history, long-term travel was done on the seas. That’s no longer the case, but you can still travel around using this method, and we don’t mean taking a cruise. There are plenty of awesome ferry routes to choose from.
For a truly memorable experience, look at taking one of the ferries that connects towns in Northern Norway. They’re surprisingly affordable, and if you go during the summer months, will give you the thrill of experiencing daylight at all times of the day. Remember, in Norway in summer, the sun does not set.
And there we have it! If you’re done with airports, then try one of the above for your next adventure. We’re sure you’ll love it.
